Play Your Opponent in Texas Hold'em

This may sound ridiculously obvious but in poker you should always be looking to play your opponent and not just the cards you're dealt. It has been said that poker is "A game of people, played with cards" and there's a lot of truth in that. If it were only about the cards then games would be decided simply on who was lucky enough to be dealt the best ones.

As many players know though, it's not just what cards you're dealt but what you do with them. The very best players will also know that playing your opponents is every bit as important as playing your cards.

If you're up against a timid opponent, who always folds to a bet after they've already checked, then does it really matter what cards you've got? If they check, then you bet and the pot will probably be yours regardless of what cards you were holding. Similarly, there will be ultra-tight players who're clearly not keen on losing their precious chips. Big bets will invariably get them to fold. Once you know you're up against a Rock, who plays nothing but the top premium hands, then let them have their small win when they suddenly start betting into you. The rest of the time they'll be folding to your bets.

Learn all you can about your opponents and use it to your advantage. There are times when you will find it relatively easy to build up your stack of chips even if you haven't had particularly good cards. It's not about being reckless and wild to bully people out of pots; it's using the information you have on your opponents to maximum effect.

How can it be that in tournament after tournament you'll nearly always see the very best players up there amongst the chip leaders? Do they really get good cards every time they play or are they actually great poker players who utilise a combination of pot odds, tells, bluffs, steals and an ability to spot who is there for the taking and how to play against each opponent?

If you can answer that last question honestly then you'll be well on your way to becoming a much better poker player. And you'll also be taking big steps in the right direction if you can start playing the players you're up against and not just cards you're dealt whenever you sit down at the poker table.
