TEXAS HOLDEM - Know Your Limit

Whichever poker game you’re playing, it’s important that you know which limit you’re going to play. The structure of the game may be the same but in the eyes of many learned poker players the disciplines of No-Limit, Pot Limit and Fixed Limit can render the various forms of poker as completely different games.

It’s up to you to decide which kind of limit best suits your style and approach to poker.

NO LIMIT

In No Limit poker you can bet what you want, when you want, whenever it’s your turn to act. It’s the game of choice for aggressive players and those who like to bluff, as they can put in big bets to test the mettle of their opponents. If you’re someone who likes to protect their big hands, either before or after the flop, and make it expensive for players with drawing hands to continue to play then No Limit is the game you should be playing.

No Limit poker can be very intimidating at times, as you can often be put on the spot for most or all of your chips, but it is undoubtedly the most popular game with online players. All poker games require great degrees of skill but No Limit games really put your nerve to the test.

POT LIMIT

Many poker experts believe that Pot Limit poker is the purest form of the game. Pot Limit requires players to bet up the action when they have a hand, to drive out those players with marginal hands. That though can alert players with drawing hands to get in on the action before the flop, while the betting is relatively small, so that they can try to take down the big starting hands with a friendly flop, or the arrival of killer board cards.

Check-raising becomes a powerful weapon in Pot-Limit, as you can quickly raise a bet and draw in players with weak hands who feel that they’re pot-committed. Be careful with your slow-playing though. If you don’t raise with, for example, your pocket aces and thus allow too many opponents into the pot too cheaply then you’ve possibly blown your chance of winning the hand.

Pot Limit offers the middle ground between No Limit and Fixed Limit and is the most popular form of poker for Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo. It can also require the most patience and skill to master.

FIXED LIMIT

Fixed Limit, or just ‘Limit’ as it is most commonly known, is the easiest to understand of all the betting variants offered in poker. You raise in units of the size of the game (in a game of $2/$4 Fixed Limit the bets would be in increments of $2 before and after the flop and $4 after the turn and river) and so your choices are as simple as fold, call/check or raise.

That doesn’t mean though that Fixed Limit is any less skilful than either No Limit or Pot Limit; it’s just a different game and you should always recognise that. It demands disciplines all of its own and an awareness that different skills and techniques are required in order to be successful.

In Texas Hold’em, Fixed Limit games require that you begin with the VERY best starting hands. Because you can only raise one bet at a time it is extremely difficult to bet other stubborn players out of a pot and thus bluffing is that much more challenging. If you’ve started with two poor hole cards and failed to improve your hand then all you’ll be doing is donating chips to opponents who do have a hand good enough to continue playing with.

Because it often costs only one bet to call, players will stay in with their drawing hands, hoping to hit the card they need by the river and so you need to be aware that top pair on the flop with a good kicker might not be enough if there is a possible straight or flush on the board.

If you want to be successful at Fixed Limit then a working knowledge of pot odds and implied odds is essential. They should decide whether you choose to stay in a pot and continue to draw to your hand.

Fixed Limit is primarily a drawing game and suits those players who like to construct hands and understand the mathematics of poker. It has a devoted following all of its own and in the case of Texas Hold’em is considered by many poker pundits to be a completely different game to No Limit Texas Hold’em.
