The first big decision to make when you're playing Texas Hold'em is what to do with the two hole cards you're dealt at the beginning of each hand. The reality is that you should muck the majority of your starting hands. Whether you have the discipline to do so will probably determine just how successful you'll be in your online poker play.
There are 169 different possible starting hands in poker and the majority of them are not really worth playing. Have a look at which two hole cards make up the best possible starting hands and bear in mind that you're going to have far more success playing these types of starting hands than those which are ranked much lower down the scale. You shouldn't just sit there and hope to be dealt the likes of A-A or K-K before playing, but making sure that you're entering pots with strong cards, which have a great chance of either holding up on their own or improving into a powerful hand, is a good habit to get into and offers you the best chance to become a winner in the long run.
Take the time to learn which are the best two hole cards with which to be starting and also take the time to get to know the odds and probabilities which exist for the many different starting hand combinations. Go into pots with a strong idea of what you're trying to hit with your two starting cards and not just by playing anything and hoping to get lucky on the flop. The desire to play, and get involved in the action, can be extremely tempting, especially when you've not been dealt any good cards for a while. However, unless you get very lucky, then bad starting hands will invariably lose you money.
One of the most over-played hands in Texas Hold'em is A-2, or Ace and any low kicker. If you decide to play this hand then you really have to think about what you want to hit when the flop appears. If your cards are not suited then a flush is extremely unlikely and so you're mostly left looking for an Ace. If an ace does then appear you have top pair but with the lowest possible kicker. This is a recipe for disaster. You really needed to hit two pair with your Ace and low kicker, or possibly a straight.Again, when you decide to proceed with your two starting cards, always have a firm idea of what it is you're hoping to hit once the flop appears.
Another long-term losing strategy is to play certain starting hands because they've been lucky for you in the past. Never fall in love with starting hands based on superstition. It will lose you money and chips over a sustained period of time.
A good guide to starting hands in poker can be found with the famous Groups which have been devised by acknowledged poker writer David Sklansky. This table gives you an idea of which hands are considered to be in the top groups and from what position they should be played. You would be doing yourself a huge favour if you studied these well and used them as your starting guide.
