Dealing With Tilt in Poker Texas Hold'em

If you play poker for any length of time then you're going to have to get used to the idea of taking some bad beats and enduring some terrible luck along the way. The luck element of poker means that someone is occasionally going to out-draw you with a long shot, or even hit a miracle card on the river to deliver you a crushing defeat.

How you deal with such set-backs will determine what chance you have of ever making it as a successful poker player. If you can dismiss the loss and carry on as normal, or even laugh it off and move on then you've done well. The reality though is that many players will, at some stage, go on Tilt after suffering a bad beat or a sustained period of bad luck when everything seems to go against them.

Tilt is defined as playing recklessly or emotionally, losing all of your discipline and paying no regard at all to odds, outs and even common sense. A player on Tilt will raise wildly, playing cards that should have been pushed into the Muck and, quite often, do all they can to get revenge on a player against whom they've suffered a bad beat.

Players who go on Tilt are usually on a One Way Street to losing their chips and the effects of such a cavalier approach can have a devastating effect on their bankroll.

As hard as it can be to simply brush off the effects of a bad beat, or a series of defeats on the river, it is what you need to be able to do. There are many ways of dealing with Tilt and remembering that is sure to save you a lot of heartache in the long run.

One of the first signs of Tilt is to start playing hands you wouldn't normally touch with a barge-pole. Don't do it. Also resist the temptation to throw even more money after that which you've already lost. You've seen your opponents get lucky and figure if you do something stupid you'll get lucky too. The chances are that you won't get lucky though and that your losses will start to increase.

If you can feel your temperature rising and anger beginning to get the better of you then your best bet is to stand up and walk away. Either go for a walk for a few hands or else call it a night and finish playing altogether. That takes a lot of discipline but it is the very best course of action.

Once you've calmed down you'll come to acknowledge that such outrageous bad luck is part and parcel of the game and realise that if you continue to play good poker you'll come up ahead in the long run. You should also then look back and see if there was anything you could have done differently to avoid what happened to you. Never be too proud to contemplate the fact that some aspect of your own game didn't contribute to any loses you've suffered, regardless of the bad luck involved.

If there was then you can try to fix that for the next time you find yourself in a similar situation and if there wasn't then you should look forward to luck evening out and your solid play being rewarded in the end.

A lot of the time though the bad luck that strikes you down will occur even when you play perfectly. Don't let it affect your game. It is a great tragedy that so many new and even experienced players see the hard work of many poker sessions, often spanning weeks and months, wiped out by one explosive and regrettable period of Tilt.

Unlike many aspects of poker though, Tilt is one thing that YOU have complete control over. Keeping your emotions in check, retaining your discipline and refusing to allow the run of the mill bad luck of poker to cloud your judgement is a powerful asset for all players who want to succeed.
